This tour will feature the Basque wine region called Rioja Alavesa. This area is home to the best wineries in Spain. Along the way, find not only wine, but discover amazing historical places. The St. James route passes through the area with Medieval villages where there will be a few stops. Also along the way, experience art, culture, and the best that this country has to offer.
We leave from San Sebastian early in the morning, crossing the rugged Basque mountains into the plains. First we visit a traditional Rioja winery where they will teach us step by step the wine making process. Of course, once we learn the entire process we will have the opportunity to taste some of the wineries finest examples. After this we will follow the foothills of the mountains in the direction of Laguardia. Along the way we will see some of the most emblematic Rioja wineries such as Baigorri, Ostatu, Remelluri and Marqués de Riscal, stopping in some to sample their world famous wines. The last visit will take place in the historic medieval village of Laguardia. This city is well known for its history, natural beauty and medieval cellars. We will be able to learn its colorful history in our last winery visit which naturally includes another tasting. Also included is a lunch complete with typical local products such as iberian ham, tomato with olive oil and cheese.
In total we will visit at least four wineries. The first with a complete explanation of the centuries old wine making process, the next two with a wine tasting and the final visit includes a historic overview of the area and lunch. This plan can be altered to better adapt to the needs and wants of the client or other unexpected events but four winery visits are guaranteed.
